Z-Medica Becomes First Platinum Sponsor of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma Foundation
Company to Donate more than $200,000 to Support Leadership and Training Scholarships
WALLINGFORD, CT, January 26, 2011 – Z-Medica Corporation, a medical device company developing innovative hemostatic agents, today announced that it has become a Platinum Sponsor of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), a scientific organization providing leadership and development for young surgeons active in the care of the injured patient. The company will donate more than $200,000 to support the organization’s Leadership Institute program and Fellows Scholarships for 2012-2014. The Leadership Institute program is a series of workshops over three years designed to develop future leaders in trauma and acute care surgery. The Fellows Scholarships will give 10 young trauma surgeons the opportunity to participate in the EAST’s annual meeting and scientific presentations free of charge and with all expenses paid.
“As a company that is dedicated to helping victims of trauma survive their injuries through the development of innovative hemostatic agents, contributing to the development of future leaders of trauma care is a natural fit with our mission,” said Brian Herrman, chief executive officer, Z-Medica. “We have seen great advances in trauma medicine over the last few years, and we hope that this partnership with EAST will aid in the further development of the field and its practitioners.”
“We are very grateful for this very generous level of support,” said Dr. Samir Fakhry, president of the EAST Foundation. “As EAST’s first Platinum Sponsor, we were extremely excited that a company with the reputation of Z-Medica – the makers of Combat Gauze and other products used by our Military forces – would agree to partner with EAST in such a substantive manner. We are especially grateful that the donation is from a company whose product many of our members are familiar with and have seen the value first-hand.”
Z-Medica’s line of QuikClot products are surgical gauzes impregnated with kaolin, an inert material with no known contraindications, which can achieve hemostasis in traumatic bleeding situations in as little as three minutes. QuikClot is widely used throughout the healthcare industry and in several clinical specialties, including trauma. After months of testing in 2008 against 12 other hemostatic products in the marketplace, the military version of the kaolin gauze (“Combat Gauze”) was chosen as the exclusive product for use by all US Military Forces. It continues to be the exclusive product used by all USA military forces and is the only hemostatic product approved by the US Military’s TCCC committee for first line treatment of bleeding hemorrhage. It is also carried by many first responders from law enforcement and emergency medical organizations.
